Everybody in Malaysia knows that our public toilets aren’t the cleanest. Some of these toilets are so dirty that I can’t even write about it because WORLD OF BUZZ is a family-friendly website.
However, you’ll be surprised as this restroom in Terengganu was just voted as the best public toilet in Southeast Asia!
According to Harian Metro, the Rantau Abang public toilet won the ASEAN Public Toilet Standard 2019-2021 last Friday (Jan 18th). The award was given in conjunction with the ASEAN Tourism Forum 2019 which was held in Ha Long City, Vietnam.
This was not the first time the Rantau Abang public toilet was recognised as a prestigious toilet. For the past two years, the toilet has received awards from the local authorities of Terengganu for its cleanliness.
This toilet has been maintained and cleaned for the past six years by Faridah Sariman, 46, and her husband Zainuddin Mat Ali, 44. They clean the toilets a total of three times a day to ensure that visitors get to use the facilities comfortably. She says,
“I clean the toilet as if I’m cleaning my own house. I also keep it open throughout the year, making sure it stays clean and fresh.”
In an interview with Bernama, Dungun Municipal Council (MPD) President, Lizan Che Mat said,
“The toilet is well-equipped and provides a good rest area because it has bathrooms, a place to rest, and a beautiful landscape.”
“The public toilets may look small, but they can actually give an impact on the tourism sector. From there, tourists can evaluate the mentality and attitude of the local people.”
Unlike other toilets, the Rantau Abang public toilet does not use any artificial fragrance. Faridah will gather natural ingredients, such as pandan leaves and cut it before placing it in the toilet. Not only has the sweet aroma eliminated the bad odour of the toilet, but it has also gained the praise of many visitors.
“Although my job is looked down upon by society, I am still determined to be a dedicated toilet cleaner. I hope that everyone would play their part in ensuring that public toilets are kept clean and free from vandalism,” she says.
We’re proud that Malaysia has received such a prestigious award! If you’re ever around Rantau Abang, Terengganu, be sure to check this toilet out!
