Foods like sashimi and sannakji (raw baby octopus) have to be prepared properly to be safe to eat because raw seafood contain lots of parasites.
If the raw seafood looks shiny, translucent and jewel-like instead of slimy with a layer of white liquid, then it’s considered fresh. But how fresh is too fresh?
Recently, Singaporean actress Xenia Tan and her fiancé Shawn Thia found themselves in a pickle when the sashimi they were served while on holiday in Japan was so fresh that it was still twitching on the plate.
“Eh I cannot eat leh“, Shawn said in a TikTok video shared on Xenia’s account that had gained over half a million views since being posted 2 days ago. He couldn’t even look the fish in the eye as it gasped for breath!
Shawn eventually picked up his chopsticks to start digging in, but pulled back every time the fish twitched.
“I feel super bad leh,” the couple repeated to each other as they watched the fish.
In the end, they decided to not waste their meal and to just eat it, but not before asking the restaurant staff to remove the head and tail of the fish that were twitching.
Netizens are divided
In the comments, netizens are divided on the incident.
Some felt extremely bad for the fish and said that they probably won’t be able to eat it while it’s so blatantly suffering in front of them.
One girl even said that she’ll never have the dish again because the last time she took a bite of the sashimi, the fish jumped.
Whereas others reassured everyone that the fish is really dead already, so it’s fine to eat it.
