Durian may be a gourmet to some people but not everyone is a fan of the pungent smell. This explains why certain places prohibits visitors to bring the fruit in.

Just recently, a tourist from China shared his experience of nearly having to pay a hefty fine at a hotel in Singapore, all thanks to the few seeds of durian that she brought into the room. In her defense, she was not aware of any rules that stop guests from bringing in the king of fruits.

“Not even the balcony of the room”

On her Xiao Hong Shu account, the tourist bought a few seeds of Musang King on her way back from dinner, and she made sure it was well-wrapped. The fruit was supposed to be her supper but the woman never knew that the fruit was not allowed in hotels.

“I’m well aware that you can’t eat the fruit in public transports in Singapore, but I just found out that you can’t do so in hotels too. Not even at the balcony.”

She went out the next morning and when she returned, she was surprised to find a notice from the management of the hotel.

You brought durians? SGD500 please!

In the notice, the management told the tourist that for the comfort of all guests, they have implemented a policy of “no durians allowed” in the building because of the strong, sharp smell. What happens if any of the staff finds out about the presence of the King of the fruits during your stay?

“We’re sorry to tell you that we’ll charge you a penalty of SGD500 (approximately RM1,700) as cleaning fee.”

That amount is equivalent to a few extra nights of stay in the hotel.

“This policy is implemented for the best experience and the comfort of all guests. Your understanding is much appreciated,” the management said in the notice.

Despite the notice, it was really her lucky day.

After a quick discussion with the employees of the hotel, they decided to waive the penalty fee given that it was her 1st offense.

“Thank God, and to the employees of the hotel, thank you for your humanised management. No more durians next time.”

It’s easy to receive a fine but it’s not every day that you get to escape the penalty. It’s best to check with the management of the places before you plan to bring in something.
