LRT3, also known as the LRT Shah Alam line, will not commence operations this year.

Originally planned to begin operations on 30 September, the line was pushed back to 31 December, only to face further delays when technical problems rendered the train unusable, postponing its launch to the second quarter of 2026.

Prasarana Malaysia Bhd confirmed the matter this morning (10 December) during a press conference at the LRT Shah Alam Stadium. Here’s why LRT3 is delayed, once again.

33 technical issues were detected

Prasarana Group President & Chief Executive Officer, Amir Hamdan, said that issues involving software errors and system disruptions were identified during the 2.5-month fault-free run (FFR) test period, which started on 26 August.

The FFR test requires non-stop driving for 4,000 kilometres without any failures.

During these tests, several major issues were identified, including the train’s failure to stop precisely at the platform. Other problems included:

  • Malfunctions affecting the operation of the train doors
  • The train’s inability to automatically proceed to the next station
  • Train movements that did not follow the programmed speed profiles

Software improvement works are being actively carried out to improve the stability, accuracy, and reliability of the system.

“All repair and improvement works are now given full priority to ensure that the Shah Alam Line is truly stable, safe and operating at optimal levels before opening to the public.”

“Over 800 staff have completed all mandatory training in preparation for the initial operation of the route,” Amir said.

The project is currently in the Testing and Commissioning (T&C) Phase, which includes trial testing, FFR, and trial operations before all technical documents can be submitted to the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) for a Rail Operator License application.

At the time of writing, no official date has been set for the opening of LRT3. LRT3 will link commuters from Johan Setia in Klang to Bandar Utama in Petaling Jaya, with stops across several parts of Shah Alam.
