A motorcyclist has tragically died after crashing into a fallen tree on Jalan Selandar, Melaka, at 6:57 AM today, becoming the first casualty related to Tropical Storm Senyar.
According to a report by Sinar Harian, Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) Director-General, Datuk Seri Nor Hisham Mohamad, shared his belief that the incident was not exactly caused by the storm but was, rather, an aftereffect of it.
“This death case is not directly caused by Senyar, but was an incident that followed the storm,” he said.
49 trees have fallen in 5 states
He went on to explain that, based on statistics, a total of 49 trees have fallen in Perak, Selangor, Putrajaya, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan, so far.
“Overall, Negeri Sembilan recorded the worst impact with 33 cases of fallen trees, one landslide, one structural collapse and 2 locations flooded. Other states are still in stable condition, but close monitoring continues. Even up until 2 AM this morning, I was still monitoring the Senyar situation through the control room to ensure the department’s response is at the optimum level,” Nor Hisham added.
The main focus of JBPM, at this moment, is to ensure that all affected routes can be used again and to reduce the risk to road users.
“I would also like to advise the public, given that it is the weekend and school holidays, not to visit risky areas such as locations with many large trees or recreational areas near slopes. We have reminded people to avoid swimming this season, but some people are still doing so. So, I hope everyone takes safety measures and does not take unnecessary risks,” he said.
