Well, this seems like a good start!
According to Malaysiakini, our prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir shared that the government is going to study the quota system for the pre-university matriculation programme under the purview of the Ministry of Education. He revealed this information today (22 April 2019) when asked about a DAP Youth Leader suggesting the abolishment of the racial quota system in the matriculation programme.
If you aren’t aware, Education minister Maszlee Malik previously said that the 90:10 quota system, whereby 90 per cent of places in the programme will be reserved for Bumiputera (Bumi) students, will still remain.
Nonetheless, Maszlee later said that the cabinet will study the prospects of allocating more seats for non-Bumi students. In a statement which was shared on Facebook, the education minister noted that the annual intake for the matriculation programme is 25,000 and out of that number, 2,500 seats should be for non-Bumi students.
Having said that, he noted that the 2,500 seats – 2,200 and 1,000 seats for Indians and Chinese respectively – in the programme was a one time initiative in 2018. The aforementioned seat allocation for non-Bumi students was based on the current needs because the seats which were allocated for Bumi applicants weren’t filled.
