A social media post sparked outrage among netizens recently, showing a signboard in Penang which warned the public against feeding stray animals.

The sign also claimed that feeding strays could lead to problems like littering, overpopulation, and public disturbances.

“Feeding stray animals is prohibited”

In a TikTok post by @shancool5, a signboard in Butterworth, Penang, caught attention for warning that anyone caught feeding stray animals could be fined up to RM500 under Section 47(1)(G) of the Street, Drainage and Building Act 1974.

The sign, which carries the official logo of the Penang Island City Council (MBPP), shows pictures of cats, dogs, and even birds (all considered strays) and lists several reasons against feeding them, including:

  • Dirtying the area
  • Changing the animals’ natural foraging habits
  • Causing them to dominate the area
  • Increasing the stray population
  • Creating disturbances

“Don’t stop others from helping the animals”

Speaking to WORLD OF BUZZ, @shancool5 shared his thoughts on the issue, saying the government should be looking out for stray animals instead of banning people from feeding them.

“For me, the government should care for stray animals, not ban people from feeding them. If they can’t do it themselves, then don’t stop others from helping and doing good for the animals,” he said.

At the time of writing, the post has gained over 127,800 views and 5,500 likes.

Netizens started flooding the comments section with their thoughts and reactions

“Whatever, I’ll feed them anyway! It’s my money, my choice!”

“Ban or no ban, I’m still going to feed them. I always keep pet food in my car just in case.”

“Oh God, why so heartless? What are the stray animals supposed to eat then?”

“Changing their natural behaviour to find food? Oh, I didn’t know stray animals could walk into a pet shop and buy their own food. Did the person who made this sign even think?”

We’ve reached out to MBPP for a comment, but haven’t received a response yet. Stay tuned to WORLD OF BUZZ for more updates!
