A video has gone viral on social media showing the Jalur Gemilang being displayed upside down on a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) parked in front of a premises in Pekan Nanas in Johor.

The footage captures a man, identified as a lorry driver, approaching the parked MPV and confronting the vehicle owner over the flag being incorrectly displayed on the front windshield.

“Whose car is this? Why is the flag upside down?” the man asked before removing the flag.

His spontaneous action was widely praised by social media users, who commended him for being alert and respectful toward national symbols.

However, some expressed disappointment that such incidents continue to occur and urged authorities to take appropriate action.

Police investigating the incident

Meanwhile, Pontian District Police Chief, Superintendent Mohamad Shofee Tayib, said police had detected a social media post about the incident, which took place in front of a furniture shop on Jalan Besar, Pekan Nanas.

“Investigations at the scene found that the flag had already been taken down during the inspection. The driver, a 44-year-old man, along with the vehicle, was brought to the Pontian District Police Headquarters (IPD) to assist in the investigation,” he said in a statement on Sunday.

He added that displaying the flag upside down could lead to public misunderstanding and offend national sensitivities.

“The case is being investigated under Section 5 of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963 and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955,” he said.

Mohamad Shofee also advised the public not to speculate or spread provocative statements about the incident until investigations are complete.

“The police also remind all agencies, business premises, and individuals to ensure the Jalur Gemilang is displayed according to proper guidelines and protocols as a mark of respect for national sovereignty,” he added.
