Dust storms, or known as sandstorms, are a rarity in Malaysia, but with the crazy climate and weather happening all around the world today, a dust storm of this magnitude should be the least of our worries.
Scientifically, dust storms happen when strong winds lift large amounts of sand and dust from bare, dry soil into the atmosphere.
Though the video we are about to share here, is nowhere near the dust storms that you see in the movies that come in like a raging storm, it is nevertheless evidently alarming especially for motorcyclists whizzing through Penang Island.
Kejadian ribut pasir di Gurney Drive tengahari tadi.
Posted by Penang Kini on Thursday, February 20, 2020
In the video, the man recording the video can be seen saying over and over again that a dust storm is taking place at Gurney Drive.
One netizen commenting on the video mentioned that the cause may be rooted in land reclamation projects taking place in the area.
In his status, he writes, “This could be the cause of the dust storm.”
“Let’s hope that the project is unprofitable.”
Commenting on the video, netizens began sharing their own stories experiencing the event, attributing the dust storm to the strong gush of wind that took place that afternoon.
One netizen wrote that strong winds tore their roof out at the Sungai Toh Estate.
Another commented that their stone table toppled after the strong wind blew it apart.
With the world continuously defying nature’s calling for a cease in development, are we seeing another natural disaster looming on the horizons rooted at man’s penchant for profit?
Let’s hope that such an incident will not repeat itself in the future.
