Vietnam is currently fighting a new Covid-19 outbreak after going several months with no local transmission. As reported by The New York Times, this has prompted the country to announce through the national television channel that it has registered to buy the Covid-19 vaccine produced by Russia.

On Wednesday (12 August), Russia announced to the world that the first Covid-19 vaccine will be rolled out within two weeks and the country has rejected concerns from experts regarding the fact that the vaccine has not been approved because there’s no large-scale testing done. The Vietnam TV announcement said, citing the Ministry of Health,

“In the meantime, Vietnam will still continue developing the country’s own Covid-19 vaccine.”

It has been shared that Vietnam has registered for 50 – 150 million doses of the vaccine. Some of it will be donated by Russia while the rest will be purchased by Vietnam. Initially, Vietnam was among the few countries to receive praises for its ability to control the spread of the virus. However, it is now scrambling to control new outbreaks happening in multiple locations throughout the country.
