Ramadhan is not just a month about kindness but also a month to strengthen the bond with family and relatives or even your neighbours. Breaking fast and mingling together certainly help in strengthening the bond, but the location plays an important part too.

Recently, an image of a group of people breaking fast outside a cemetery in Kelantan went viral on social media and the choice of the location baffled netizens.

The incident took place in Kampung Alor Hijau, Pasir Puteh, Kelantan and according to the organiser of this event, they had a reason for the bizarre choice of the location.

The event was not only about mingling around with each other but it also served as a remembrance of the dead.

“It’s an annual event for us. It’s not only for those who are still alive to strengthen the bond with each other, but it’s also to remember the deceased ones.”

It’s undeniably sweet of them to come up with an effort to mingle around whilst remembering the ones who had returned to the Almighty, but does the reason justify the choice of the location? According to Datuk Mohamad Shukri Mohamad, the Mufti in Kelantan, the organiser could’ve chosen a better place.

“It’s disrespectful to do so”

Datuk Mohamad said that breaking fast outside the cemetery regardless of their reasons is considered disrespectful.

“It’s a moral violation. For instance, you have to dress appropriately when visiting the dead. To me, it’s best to look for someplace else if you want to gather and break fast,” Datuk Mohamad explained.

He said that people who want to break fast outside should look for a proper place, like an open space on the field.

However, Datuk Mohamad said that gathering for a prayer at the cemetery is allowed.

If you notice, massive buka puasa at places like Dataran Merdeka or the fields is common every year, especially among friends and family. Dear Muslim friends, do you think breaking fast at the compound of a cemetery is a good choice?
