When you’re driving, one of the most common ‘hazards’ you’d often see are police roadblocks, especially at night.

But, with driving and navigation apps such as Waze, users are able to share the locations of police roadblocks so that other road users could potentially avoid them.

However, in a video shared by the Sarawak police, the public have been urged not to share any police actions on social media platforms.

The video was shared by Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohd Azman Ahmad Sapri where he cited a case where a user shared the location of police roadblocks on social media, and how this could potentially disrupt police operations.

Mohd Azman emphasised that exposing police actions on social media could lead to sharing online content that is obscene, indecent, false, threatening, or offensive under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

Such content could be considered as intended to harass, abuse, threaten or harass another person, and offenders could face fines of up to RM50,000 or imprisonment for up to one year.

Meanwhile, he explained that the police could investigate such cases under the Criminal Code and the Official Secrets Act 1972.

Mohd Azman’s sentiments is not anything new. A few months ago, Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Azmi Abu Kassim advised the public to not share any information regarding police presence and roadblocks on Waze.

He further elaborated that doing so will “hamper enforcement efforts against motorists driving under the influence of alcohol and those who commit other traffic offences.”

“And that is why it is my hope that the public, especially road users, will cooperate with the police instead of trying to help those who commit road offences.”
