It’s sad that cases like this are becoming more frequent lately!
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), a group of Chinese tourists visiting Japan were recently slammed on social media for leaving their Airbnb in horribly filthy conditions.
The three tourists, who are all aged 19, visited Osaka for five days and stayed at a flat, but left it looking unbelievably filthy. The flat owner, Cheng, was shocked to discover the state of the apartment when he came in to clean up the following Monday. According to him, the flat reeked of rotten food and garbage was scattered everywhere.

On top of that, they had even scribbled rude messages in the flat’s visitors’ book and included a drawing of a pile of faeces. He was quoted by the daily as saying,
“I didn’t expect that. I’ve never encountered such a situation before. It costs around 3,000 yen (approx. RM110) in Japan to clean a room that is this filthy.”
“I filed a complaint on the booking platform and requested them to pay twice the cleaning fee.”
However, the tourists were not willing to pay the extra cleaning fee. One of them even commented,
“We paid money to stay here, not to clean it. This isn’t our home so we don’t need to clean it for you.”
Angered by their response, Cheng took to social media to vent his frustrations about the tourists, and they soon received immense backlash from Chinese netizens for their inconsiderate behaviour.
In light of the backlash, netizens soon discovered more details about the three tourists and have been angrily criticising them. Now, the three of them have come out to issue an apology to the flat owner and are currently discussing the issue.

Meanwhile, Airbnb has stated that they are also investigating the matter and that it had a landlord guarantee fund to support property owners who suffer financial losses due to their guests’ actions.
This should go without saying, but please treat whatever environment you’re living in with some respect, even if you are staying there for a short while!
