When making content, be it for marketing purposes or just for fun, we should always be careful about what we post.

A steamboat restaurant in Jitra, Kedah recently received criticism from Malaysian social media users after posting content that showed one of its employees mimicking an OKU (person with disabilities) while dealing with a customer and while waitressing.

Her facial expression and movement, to netizens, were nothing but a form of insult to the OKU community.

The video has since been removed from the steamboat restaurant’s social media accounts, but once a post goes online, it becomes almost impossible to remove it as netizens were quick to save and re-share the video while expressing their anger about the matter.

“We did it because it’s a trend”

In an updated post via its TikTok page last night (July 30), an employee of the steamboat restaurant broke the silence about the viral matter and said the restaurant meant no harm by sharing the content.

“We did not mean to insult anyone with disabilities at all. We were merely following the trend where people act like an OKU,” said the employee who showed some snapshots of the organisations who did the same content.

The employee also told social media users not to wish ill on her or anyone at the restaurant and said that she hopes everyone will accept and understand her explanations.

In the post, the restaurant also expressed “a thousand apologies” to those who were offended by said content. You can watch the video below which is currently circulating on social media.

Anyone is free to create content but it’s wise (and kind) to be sensitive about what you post online.
