Domestic abuse is still prevalent in our society today, and although much effort has been made to curb this issue, it’s still ongoing. A recent case of domestic abuse that has shocked the internet is an over two-minute long video of a South Korean man who can be seen brutally beating his Vietnamese wife right in front of their two-year-old son.

According to Korea Times, the 36-year-old man lives in South Jeolla Province with his 30-year-old wife. They had been dating for three years previously but the wife had returned to Vietnam while she was pregnant. However, they were reunited last month and have been living together since then.
On 4th July at around 9pm, based on the video, the man had flown into a rage after he discovered that his wife had cooked Vietnamese food. He said that he told her he didn’t like Vietnamese food and already told her many times not to make it. Based on the report, he was also angry at his wife as she did not speak Korean well.

He begins punching and kicking her while shouting expletives, saying that he didn’t like it. He even hits her with an empty soju bottle while she cowers on the floor by the corner. Meanwhile, their young son is standing nearby and crying loudly while watching as his father brutally beats up his mother.
LTN reports that this beating actually went on for three hours, while the poor woman can only sit there and protect her head with her hands. In the last part of the video, the man finally stops beating his wife and asks her to stop crying. He then orders her to put their son to bed and stalks off as if nothing has happened.

The Yeongam Police Station in South Jeolla Province said that a friend of the abused woman reported the case to them on Friday (5th July). They quickly took action and moved the woman and son away from the man to a local shelter. The husband was arrested without a warrant on Saturday (6th July) for abusing his wife and violating the Child Welfare Law.
The wife is currently receiving treatment in the hospital fractured ribs she sustained due to her husband’s assault, which will take about four weeks to recover. It was reported that the man had beat up his wife while he was drunk but this looks like it’s not the first time it happened. He would often swear at her and criticised her Korean language ability after drinking. It is believed that he had hit her last month as well.

The police have procured an arrest warrant due to the seriousness of the case and want to discuss support measures with relevant agencies for the mother and child.
