Many of us have the habit of throwing table scraps to our dogs, especially those leftovers from dishes such as the bones. However, you may have heard that feeding them cooked bones are especially dangerous and can harm your dog’s health if you’re not careful.
A recent post shared by a netizen on Facebook highlights the danger of this after she warns others not to feed their pooch with bones as it is very difficult for them to digest. She said, “Friends, please do not feed any bones to your dog as it is very hard for them to digest.”
She uploaded a few photos of a dog with a bloated stomach who looks like it’s clearly in distress. The vet performs an operation to remove the undigested bones from the dog’s stomach. Another photo shows the amount of bones removed from the dog’s stomach and it’s shockingly a lot.
A few dog owners also shared their experience as they weren’t aware that they should not feed their pets with bones. One of them said, “I didn’t know that we shouldn’t feed our dogs with bones, especially chicken bones until one day, my dog was having trouble pooping. It could not poop or when my dog pooped, there was blood. We sent my dog to the vet and he said that the undigested bones were blocking the poop and had injured my dog’s insides.”
According to Rover, it is dangerous to give your dogs cooked bones of any kind as they can break and splinter into small, sharp pieces that can cut your dog’s mouth and digestive organs. This can cause health problems such as:
- Mouth and tongue lacerations
- Broken teeth
- Cuts and wounds in the mouth or on the tonsils
- Vomiting and diarrhea
- Severe constipation
- An intestinal blockage that may require surgery
In fact, in severe cases, it can even lead to death if not treated in time.
Remember, not all bones can and should be given to your dog!
