So, we’re sure you’re aware by now that one of the Philippines’ famous beaches, Boracay, temporarily closed earlier in April to restore its coral reefs and marine ecosystems. Now, as the famous tourist destination is reopening on the 26th of October (mark your calendars!), some new rules are going to be set in place.

According to Inquirer, The Philippines’ Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said that smoking and drinking would be banned in public areas of Boracay upon its reopening. However, tourists can still drink and smoke in their hotels or resorts. She said in a statement,

“Definitely no more smoking and drinking in White Beach. Why? Because this is a public beach. They (tourists) can smoke and drink where they stay, in private, but the long beach has to be protected.”

White Beach is one of the most popular parts of Boracay where tourists usually go to sunbathe. However, this is also a spot where many tourists openly smoke and drink. The DOT Secretary was quoted by ABS CBN News (translated by Coconuts Manila) as saying,

“You can be barefoot and you won’t be afraid of getting wounded because of a broken bottle and you know that what you’re walking on is really sand and not ash from a cigarette.”

Boracay is one of Southeast Asia’s most famous tourist destinations, known for its famous beach parties. However, the Department of Tourism Secretary also commented that Boracay will be switching directions in order to promote sustainable tourism instead. So, looks like it won’t exactly be a party destination anymore!

Are you planning to head over to Boracay once it reopens on 26th October? Let us know in the comments below!
