Ever since the Movement Control Order (MCO) was announced on Monday (11 January), Malaysians have been in a state of panic and confusion. While they understood that it was needed due to the rising number of Covid-19 cases, Malaysians also got flashbacks of businesses being shut down and lay-offs that happened during the first MCO back in 2020.

One such person who was directly affected by the latest round of MCO is Twitter user @thecakelapiz who shared his predicament online. He was asked to not come in for his new job as a hotel receptionist at a hotel in Manjung, Perak.

“Assalamualaikum Rais, since we’re going to face MCO again, I’m sorry but we can’t hire you since we want to reduce our staff. You don’t have to come to work next week.”

Speaking to World of Buzz, Rais said while he understands while most companies need to survive, it has not been easy to find a job now as most companies require workers to work from home. However, as a student doing his Diploma in Mass Communication, Rais said the MCO has affected his studies the most.

When asked if another MCO is what the country needs right now, Rais said it’s quite hard to answer that exactly as judging by the number of Covid-19 cases in our country, an MCO is what we probably need right now.

“However, in another point of view, there’s a lot people who are facing floods and have lost their home. Politicians are also selfish and don’t give any solution to these issues.”

Rais added that he believes that the government should be giving the people some form of incentives especially since the MCO announcement was made so abruptly. In the comments section, Malaysians shared their unfortunate predicament of losing their jobs and having been unemployed for several months resulting from the pandemic.

At the end of the day, the common rakyat are the ones who suffer most when sudden announcements are made without the people in mind.
