Corruption among authorities seem to be pretty common in Malaysia and it makes it especially hard to trust people of authority in this country. For instance, Malaysian drivers are familiar with being asked for bribes by police officers when being issued summonses.
This still goes on now and one Malaysian woman can tell a story to prove that. She shared on a public Facebook group about how she and her husband were stopped by a police officer and were issued a summons for allegedly cutting lanes on the road.
“Don’t ask me what we have done wrong. My husband and I have no idea,” the woman writes.
“He suddenly stopped us and said we drive over other drivers’ lane without stopping the car. I have no idea what is going on.”
“Our baby who was sitting at the back started to cry when he saw a stranger.”
The woman then shares what the police officer said to her which shocked her.
In a video posted on China Press, the officer can be heard saying, “Kalau nak cepat, belanja minum sikit,” which translates to, “If you want to make it fast, you can buy me a drink,” which implies that he was asking the lady for a bribe to settle the problem fast.
The woman then responds, “Tak payah, tak payah, thank you,” which translates to “It’s okay, thank you.”
This just shows how rampant corruption is among police officers, who use their power to get their way and to earn some extra cash. Hopefully, appropriate action is taken against officers like these and that corruption will be eradicated among the people of authority in Malaysia.
