Two weeks ago, 25-year-old He Yuting who hails from China’s Sichuan province, made a trip to Kuala Lumpur earlier last month on the 7th of February. She frequently travels to Malaysia for work, but her family and friends were unable to reach her since the 22nd of February, as her phone was turned off and her mother’s texts were ignored.

According to Yuting’s mother, the 25-year-old has been working as a personal shopper or ‘daigou‘ since 2015 and had been travelling to and from Malaysia two to three times a year since she started the job, reported South China Morning Post.

Although she frequently travels to Malaysia for work purposes, she did not tell her family the exact purpose of her most recent trip when she left on the 7th of February. Her mother told the daily,

“She didn’t tell me why she was going to Malaysia… I asked her if she was going to see her boyfriend, she just smiled and didn’t say yes or no.”

Understandably worried about her daughter, her mother is now working on getting a visa so she can fly to Malaysia and find Yuting and report the case to the police. Since her disappearance, the Chinese embassy in KL has been working with Malaysian authorities in efforts to locate her. A worker at the embassy told the daily,

“We are very concerned about the personal safety of He Yuting. We have communicated with the Malaysian government and police, and they will contact us once they have an update.”

The young woman’s family reportedly knows little about what she does in Malaysia. All they know is that she has a Chinese boyfriend who lives in KL, and that she stays with a female friend who is also Chinese whenever she comes down here.

On top of that, Yuting’s cousin claimed that she began video-calling someone a year ago, describing him as a “good friend who could become a boyfriend”.

Unfortunately, none of her family members have the contact information of Yuting’s friend and boyfriend.

She had even contacted her cousin earlier last month on the 16th of February, telling him that she would not come back to China for Chinese New Year. He suspected it was probably because she wanted to avoid questions about when she was going to get married during the family reunion. Her cousin told the daily,

“The atmosphere at home is not very good, and her mother is on her own. Her relatives are always telling her that, as a girl, she shouldn’t just be drifting around, but should find a local job and get married.”

Of course, despite the pressure, Yuting has been doing all she can to provide for her family, according to her cousin.

Well, let’s hope our Malaysian authorities do all they can to make sure this young woman is found safely!
