Last year, the death of Thailand’s beloved monarch, King Bhumibol, at age 88 ended his seven-decade reign but the royal funeral will only be held in Bangkok after a year-long mourning period.

Since then, the Thai government has announced that the funeral for King Bhumibol will be held in late October, from October 25th to 29th.
During the five-day funeral period, the Thai government has advised foreign travellers to avoid visiting Bangkok as it will be very crowded due to the citizens flooding the capital to pay their last respects. According to Kwongwah, Thailand’s Tourism and Sports Minister said that tour operators will introduce tourist attractions outside Bangkok during this period to avoid congestion.

However, if tourists would like to travel to Bangkok during this period, they are advised to dress modestly, as a sign of respect to the late king.

The cremation ceremony for the late king will be held on the evening of October 26, at the Sanam Luang public square where an intricate, temporary crematorium is currently under construction. Bhumibol’s son, King Maha Vajiralongkorn ascended the throne in December but his official coronation ceremony will only be held after his father’s funeral service.

Thailand is also expected to call for a general election after the coronation as the country is still ruled by the junta since their 2014 coup.
