“An outright ban on concerts? We can’t do that. The youth should be given a choice.”

While some preachers and politicians are hell-bent on sealing the fate of upcoming concerts in Malaysia, a local Nasyid group (religious singer) thinks that the idea of banning concerts in Malaysia may be a little too much. According to the Facebook page artis Malaysia, the group, known as Raihan, believes that there are better ways the relevant authorities can handle the concerts instead of an outright ban.

Background Screening

While some performers have the tendency to spread negative messages through their songs or “agendas”, a member of Raihan, Abu Bakar said that not all songs feature negative messages.

“The relevant authorities can screen the background of the performers, including their lyrics and music videos.”

Abu Bakar did not deny the fact that it may sound like a tedious process but it is so much better than straight-up blacklisting concerts. In the meantime, he believes that the youth should be provided with options when it comes to concerts, instead of stopping them from attending one.

“Don’t stop them. Give them choices by offering concerts that feature the concept of being entertaining while being spiritually enlightening,” he added.

Fighting music with music

What if the performers spread values that are against religion and culture? Do we bring out the ultimate weapon – banning concerts?

According to Abu Bakar, not exactly. In fact, this is the time when we should counter the possible bad influence with concerts that promote good values and positive messages. He also described the decision to ban concerts as a “lazy move.”

“If you’re hardworking, perhaps monitoring the lyrical content one by one is the solution. And if you’re lazy, then just enforce a ban.”

If you’re a fans of Raihan, you will be delighted to hear that in conjunction of the group’s 26th anniversary, they will be holding a concert on November 26 in Stadium Melawati, Shah Alam. Abu Bakar said that he was surprised to find out that the organiser happens to be a Chinese man who is a fan of them. You may purchase the tickets here.

Do you agree with Raihan’s take on handling concerts?
