Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, appealed to Malaysian students and professionals abroad, especially students in New Zealand, to return home to serve their country after graduating.

Zahid said he was aware that low salary offers in Malaysia were driving them to migrate abroad. Zahid also added that, especially in the engineering field, Malaysia needs around 60,000 engineers every year, but the current needs are not being met.

“I ask you to return to our country, especially in the field of engineering or other professionals, even in the field of law and accounting, return to Malaysia.”

In his speech, Zahid also highlighted that he was well aware of the main factor causing many to work abroad, which is the higher salary. Regardless, Zahid believes it is important for Malaysians to return home and use their skills here.

“I know that salaries in Malaysia are lower than in New Zealand, but you have to remember that, when in Rome, do as the Romans do,” Zahid said during his recent visit to the Victoria University Wellington (VUW) in New Zealand, reported Berita Harian.

In the meantime, Zahid also shared some advice and told the Malaysian students in New Zealand that he wanted them to learn to assimilate with the local environment and culture.

“I am very proud of the youths. They are studying abroad and bringing the name of Malaysia in the best image.”

“The important thing is, I advise you not to just learn what you learn in class or lectures, but to learn from the surrounding environment. You have to assimilate with the local community. You also have to learn their culture, especially Maori culture,” Zahid said.

What do you think of Zahid’s take on this matter? To our Malaysian friends working abroad, what do you think of the working culture there?
