Sometimes when you’re at work, you feel a little lazy and unmotivated to work, so you curi tulang a bit, hoping your boss won’t spot you doing so. Don’t pretend like you didn’t do it before leh!
That’s probably what this Japanese guy did but as a result, he almost died.

The incident happened back in November at one of the izakayas in Himeji City, when the manager of the restaurant tried to poison one of his part-time staff because he felt that the 20-year-old university student was slacking off in his work. That’s a little extreme, don’t you think?
Instead of going about the more traditional route of taking disciplinary action against the staff or even firing him, the 30-year-old manager chose to poison him with a bowl of rice, which he had already doctored with the deadly seeds of the datura plant, or devil’s trumpet as it is commonly called.

In case you didn’t know, the plant is highly toxic, and was actually used as a poisoning agent in the past. Some of its painful side effects include amnesia, delirium, and exceedingly dilated pupils, which would cause severe pain even under normal lights.
The manager gleaned some knowledge about the pretty but deadly flower off a book and placed an order for the seeds through the internet. Ah, the joys of internet shopping!
The unsuspecting young man wolfed down the bowl of delicious rice, and probably thought he had a lucked out with such a generous manager. But the next day, when he tried to wake up, he was groggy and delirious, causing him to be bedridden and unable to do anything.
He was rushed to the hospital on an ambulance, where the unfortunate guy needed one whole week to recover from being poisoned. The owner of the izakaya got suspicious when the young man failed to turn up for work and went to the restaurant to investigate.

That’s when the manager confessed to him that he did it, and the owner promptly reported the case the to police, who arrived and arrested the manager. According to Sora News 24, even though he had confessed to his crime, the manager was only sentenced to three years of probation.
This essentially means that he only got a slap on the wrist for causing harm to another person’s life. He walks free but has to refrain from administering deadly poison to other people within these three years, otherwise he will need to go to jail for 18 months.
