Heads up if you’re flying through the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1 soon, as Malaysia Airports will be carrying out important overnight maintenance work on the Aerotrain system for over two weeks starting 18 August 2025. These upgrades aim to improve system reliability without disrupting your travel plans.

The maintenance will take place from 12:00 am to 5:00 am, during KLIA’s lowest passenger traffic hours. During this window, the Aerotrain will not be in operation, but airside shuttle buses will be available to transport passengers between the Main Terminal and Satellite Building.

Travellers are advised to follow signage and staff instructions.

Malaysia Airports has also announced plans for additional technical enhancements, including the Automated Train Washing System (AVWP), the first of its kind for the Aerotrain. This system replaces manual washing, offering a more efficient and consistent cleaning process.

“These ongoing enhancements reflect our forward-looking approach to infrastructure upkeep and service quality. Together, these initiatives underscore our determination to deliver a seamless and dependable travel experience at KLIA,” said Dato’ Mohd Izani Ghani.

Since the Aerotrain commenced live operations on 1 July, the team has been closely monitoring performance. Based on the data collected, they are now fine-tuning the signalling software to boost efficiency. An early test of the upcoming software update is also scheduled for September, in collaboration with tech partner Alstom.

Sim Ooi Kok, Country Managing Director of Alstom Malaysia, added, “Alstom is pleased to support MAHB’s efforts to optimise the KLIA Aerotrain system. We will take this opportunity to conduct early testing of our upcoming signalling software update scheduled for September.”

“While the update has already been thoroughly validated through simulation, this additional step reflects our proactive approach and ongoing commitment to excellence, ensuring the system continues to operate at its best.”

Since operations began, the Aerotrain has transported over 2 million passengers, accumulated more than 1,100 hours of service, and completed 18,800 trips.
