Recently, Malaysians were divided upon finding out that a popular nasi lemak eatery in Kuala Lumpur charges customers an additional RM1 per person for dining in the restaurant’s air-conditioned space.

While some believed that the extra charge is ridiculous, others pointed out that installing air conditioning is not cheap and found the RM1 charge reasonable.

Now, the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Costs of Living (KPDN) has spoken up about the issue and clarified the matter.

RM1 charge by the nasi lemak eatery is in accordance with the law

“The Kuala Lumpur Federal Territory KPDN (WPKL) informed that an inspection found that the prices of food, beverages and service charges complied with the price policy contained under the Price Control and Anti-Profit Act 2011,”

“Enforcement personnel’s observations also found that the RM1 charge notice was clearly displayed at the entrance as well as on the glass divider of the air-conditioned room, where customers can easily see it. The eatery’s employees will also notify customers who want to enter the air-conditioned room in advance,” they shared.

Investigations were carried out after a post about the RM1 charge went viral online

While at the eatery, KPDN officers found out from employees that the RM1 charge per person to use the air-conditioned room had been applied for the past 3 years.

“The service charge is applied for adult customers who want to use the facility, while there is no charge for children aged 10 and below. The restaurant issues a receipt to customers who use the room, as proof of payment,”

“Additionally, the inspection found that the air-conditioner in the room is working well and customers were found to be informed about the charges. The enforcement team of KPDN WPKL found that compliance with price tags and charges at this eatery is also clear, and no offence was detected under the legislation enforced by KPDN,” they added.
